Linen revival specialist Regenex is currently developing new ways to banish the dreaded fade in otherwise serviceable staff uniforms, to meet rising customer demand.
Tough polycotton shirts, jackets, trousers and tunics are manufactured to have a long life in the wardrobe of those who wear them.
They can stand up to physically demanding, sometimes manual jobs, in which wearers are constantly on the move, perhaps outdoors.
Yet garments often fade long before they wear out – causing employers to replace items that would otherwise be wearable for much longer. Black uniforms turning an unsightly shade of brown is one common example.
The fade is due to the nature of polyester and cotton threads – one may lose colour before the other during repeated washes.
Paul Hamilton, technical director at Regenex, said: “We are asked increasingly to restore rich colour to workwear and as a result we are developing new systems to optimise the way we do this, and achieve the best possible results.
“Usually it’s the natural cotton element that fades, though depending on the coloration, it can be the polyester element to lose its lustre first.”
Paul continues: “We are now working on methods for reapplying the missing colour, bringing the garment back to life, and to its original corporate hue.”
Eco-conscious companies are increasingly buying better quality uniforms in the expectation of them lasting longer and standing up to stress, spills, sharps and abrasions, depending on how grimy and lively the working environment is. Yet fading can hamper the lifespan of such items.
The same principle can apply to hard-wearing polyester tablecloths and napkins. Their looks can dim long before their strength and durability.
Paul continues: “For businesses looking to build upon their low carbon ambitions, getting the most out of every item of workwear can really save on both unnecessary re-ordering and the volume of textile waste they produce.
“More are turning to us for help and, as with all of our services, we endeavour to find the best, personalised and cost-effective solutions for them.”
