How constantly replacing linen in hotel rooms can further affect stretched budgets

Did you know that the value of linen in a standard hotel room costs approximately the same as a customer pays for a night’s stay? Latest statistics from the Textile Services Association (TSA) report found that 50% of linen lasts less than three months, a groundbreaking figure given that the expected lifespan of hotel linen is more than two years.

The bedding and towels required in a ‘mid range’ hotel room cost over £50 at current bulk wholesale rates, which is the equivalent of a stay at a budget chain on off-peak nights. Even in cases where more luxury hotels supply linen of better quality, and therefore have an increased cost, the numbers remain the same.

False tan and make-up on pillowcases, bedding, and towels might not seem a big deal when replacing a stained sheet or towel here and there, but this can cause an unnecessary demand on the world’s finite resources. To manufacture one king size duvet cover we use 15kg of carbon and 29,200L of water, enough to fill 365 bathtubs.

As the UK continues the race towards net zero, organisations are faced with the pressure to responsibly dispose of items that cannot be of use. The well-established and government-backed Hierarchy of Waste, suggests that reusing an item is the preferred choice, as opposed to manufacturing something new and using further resources. It is estimated that only one in five pieces of commercial linen lasts the full expected lifespan.

A standard laundry process cannot remove all stains, and even rust and dirt from laundries’ own cages can cause marks — or iron mould — with a reddish/brown stain. Concrete, paint and plaster from the boots or overalls of contractors can stain white linen with black/grey patches, with these types of stains requiring special treatment to increase their lifespan and decrease the amount of textile waste sent to landfill in the long run.

At Regenex, we use advanced colour chemistry and a unique multi-bath process to restore linen which is often deemed to be in the condition suitable for early ragging, resulting in significant savings on the world’s resources and already-stretched budgets. To replace a full double bed set in one hotel room  can cost up to £28.69, whereas extending the life of linen using Regenex can cost up to £10.09 per bed set.
